This page will be changing every few weeks so please drop by regularly to listen to what is available and help yourself if you like it: :~) There will be a huge eclectic range of all things ilya and related. Old demos that never made it on to albums (but songs of which we still love), as well as different versions of the songs that did make the grade and other musical adventures :~) First up are some old favourites of ours,
Eurovision & Happy Ever Before & Back To Back. These were recorded in 2003 while we were waiting for the release of TDFB and were work in progress for our (hoped for) second album with Virgin. They were recorded with Dan Brown.
Juanita & Blood Sugar, were a continuation of the interminable waiting for the release; whereby, in Jan 2004, Nick and I, along with engineer Bruno Ellingham, went to Rockfield Studios and recorded 10 songs over 4 days. Deliberately recording very simply & spontaneously & with percussion tracks made up from anything lying around that sounded good shaken, thwacked or slapped, (body parts included .. not that they were ‘lying around!) It’s very cathartic to let music erupt this way and bottle the essence (warts and all) immediately! CHOCS was inspired by this approach. Some of the songs we recorded were then re-recorded for Somerset.
Not Sad, Wine & Cannabis & Idlevice were recorded for Somerset, which was first released by Universal Digital in 2005. Somerset was recorded with a live band, (with the later addition of a few over-dubs). The sax on Idlevice was played by Ruth Hammond (who also wielded the hammond organ on Wine & Cannabis), we told her we wanted a knackered solo played by an 75 year old inebriated, virtuoso. At 8 months pregnant it was amazing how well Ruth captured this spirit to perfection!
Far Off Place is on Hootchi Cootchi and the version included here is the original demo with Will de Beast on piano (Will now plays bass with our live band)
The Waking Hour & Benay Cerritto were written for CHOCS. I chose this demo of Benay Cerritto because I adore Nick’s guitar solo. The Waking Hour was written with Jack Vaughan, who co-wrote Soto with us. I love this track, it still sends shivers down my spine.
